Cost
No insurance is not the end of the road.
There is free and low-cost treatment in every state. It takes a few more phone calls. Here is where to make them.
State-funded treatment
Every state funds detox and treatment for residents without insurance. Start at FindTreatment.gov and filter by "payment assistance" or call your state's substance use agency.
Medicaid
If your income is low, you may qualify today. Coverage can start quickly and often pays for treatment in full.
Sliding-scale clinics
Federally qualified health centers and community mental health centers charge based on what you earn.
Payment plans and self-pay rates
Ask for the cash price. It is often far lower than the insurance rate. Get it in writing.
Scholarships
Some nonprofit programs fund beds. Real scholarships come from the program or a foundation, never from a recruiter who contacted you.
Free support that starts tonight
Mutual-help meetings, SMART Recovery, peer warmlines and the SAMHSA helpline cost nothing.
