Opioid pain medicines work, and that is the problem. Taken long enough, the body adapts, the dose stops working, and stopping makes you sick. Dependence can happen to people who took them exactly as prescribed.

What withdrawal is like
Overdose and emergencies
Slow breathing, blue lips, cannot be woken. Naloxone reverses it. Any pill not from a pharmacy should be treated as fentanyl.
Dangerous combinations
Alcohol, benzos, sleep medications and muscle relaxers all stack on top of opioids and slow breathing.
What actually helps
A supervised taper for some people. For opioid use disorder, buprenorphine or methadone. Pain still deserves treatment, and a good program plans for it.

Can you die from prescription opioids withdrawal?
It is rarely fatal on its own. Flu-like and exhausting: aches, sweats, stomach trouble, anxiety, no sleep. If you are prescribed opioids, do not stop suddenly. Ask your prescriber for a taper.
