Opioid treatment medication

Suboxone (buprenorphine)

Suboxone is a treatment medication, not a street drug. It holds off withdrawal and cravings without the high, and it sharply lowers the chance of a fatal overdose. Being on it is recovery, whatever anyone tells you.

Also called: subs, strips, Sublocade

Withdrawal is rough, rarely fatal

Signs it has become a problem

  • Taking more than prescribed, or buying it to self-treat
  • Using it only to bridge between runs
  • Mixing it with benzos or alcohol

What withdrawal is like

Overdose and emergencies

Much safer than other opioids on its own. The danger is combining it with alcohol or benzos.

Dangerous combinations

Taking it too soon after other opioids can throw you into sudden withdrawal. A prescriber will time the first dose.

What actually helps

If you were told you are "not really sober" on Suboxone, that is opinion, not medicine. Ask any program you call whether they support medication-assisted treatment.

Common questions

Can you die from suboxone withdrawal?

It is rarely fatal on its own. Stopping suddenly brings a slower, longer opioid withdrawal. Coming off should be a slow taper you plan with your prescriber, on your timeline. There is no deadline.
