Detox

Getting substances out of your body safely, with medical help.

Withdrawal from alcohol, benzos and barbiturates can be fatal. Withdrawal from opioids is rarely fatal but is so miserable that most people cannot finish it alone. A medical detox uses medication and monitoring to make it safe and tolerable.

Detox usually takes three to ten days. It clears your body. It does not treat the reasons you were using.

What to do

  • Be honest about everything you took, and how much
  • Bring a list of your medications
  • Ask what the next level of care is before you arrive
