Intervention

A planned conversation in which the people who love someone ask them to accept help.

The TV version, a surprise ambush with ultimatums, is not what works best. Approaches that teach the family how to communicate, set boundaries and reward steps toward help get more people into treatment, and keep families intact while they do.

One of these is called CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training). It is a skills program for the family, and it helps the family feel better whether or not the person agrees to go.

What to do

  • Pick a time when they are sober and calm
  • Speak from what you have seen and felt, without labels
  • Have a real option ready: a place, a bed, a time
  • Decide your boundaries beforehand, and only set ones you will keep
